I went to an Apple Store last week for an iPad repair near me. The battery was draining too quickly— WAY too quickly.


It’s several years old, so I wasn’t surprised. I just wanted to replace the battery and go on about my day. It wasn’t that easy.


First, I had to make an appointment through the Apple Support app. Once I arrived at the store, the greeter looked up my reservation, pointed me to a table, and told me a service technician would be with me shortly.


The 35 minutes I sat on the uncomfortable stools didn’t do my lower back any favors.


Eventually, the technician came over and asked me about the problem. I explained that my battery, which used to hold a charge for many hours, now dies in an hour or two.


He asked me if I had my password, turned off my “Find My iPhone” security feature, and backed up all of my data. As a tech professional, I knew what he was referring to and had all of that done before my appointment—a good thing, because he wanted to erase the iPad entirely—all the data, all the apps, all the settings and passwords.


I couldn’t help but think of my 79-year-old mother attempting this. Look at the barriers:


  1. Download Apple’s support application to her phone


  2. Login with her apple ID and password, specify the problem, and select a time slot


  3. Take the long drive to Apple, because there’s only a handful of their stores in the entire state


  4. Secure a wheelchair and a comfortable place to wait


  5. Dig up passwords, if she has them stored at all


  6. Navigate the tablet’s settings to make sure her photos, files, and texts are all backed up


  7. Determine whether the technician’s advice is correct


  8. Reinstall all of the apps, redownload all of her photos, and reinstate all of the iPad’s settings


You can see why children call upon me to help their parents with these situations. It’s A LOT to handle!
